Seeing Lion’s Heart members in action out in the community is so exciting. One look at our social media platforms will reveal how much we enjoy posting, reposting and sharing stories of our member’s experiences. We strive to share highlights in order to inspire others and to showcase amazing experiences that come out of volunteering.
For our first post in our series of group and member highlights, Audrey Xia, teen blogger for Lion’s Heart, shares her most recent activity with her group.
Every year, my group, Aliso Viejo, CA, 2020 Girls Blue, wraps books for the Nick and Michael Camarda’s Bookcase. The Nick and Michael Camarda’s Bookcase is a local nonprofit in Orange County, CA, that seeks to promote literacy by distributing donated books to the disadvantaged. The organization has donated over 50,000 books to children and adults in Orange County. Volunteers help by donating or wrapping books that will later be sent out to those who need them. Our group usually does this around the holidays, though the nonprofit runs year-round. We believe it is really important that all kids get the necessary resources they need. Helping kids receive a good book during the holiday season is one of the best gifts we can give them.
On October 21, 2018, our group met at our Class Coordinator’s house. The nonprofit had already sent us several boxes of books to be wrapped. Everyone brought wrapping paper, scissors, and tape for the wrapping job. We were all very excited to wrap books; it is a tradition that our whole group looks forward to and enjoys every year. There were snacks piled in the middle of the table and everyone socialized and laughed together. Two hours passed in a blink of an eye, and the books were all wrapped in festive green and red wrapping paper. It was great knowing that what we did will have an impact and children will have a nice book for their holiday gift.
This is a great opportunity for all volunteers. If you’re located in Orange County, reach out to the Nick and Michael Carmarda’s Bookcase! There are many communities that would greatly appreciate your help and a nice book for the holidays. If you are not from the Orange County area, there are many opportunities to donate and gift books such as Friends of the Library or a local school or daycare.
There are many people who do not have the resources to buy their own books. We all have the power to help by volunteering with nonprofits like these. With a little time and effort, everyone can give back to the community in a meaningful way.
Thanks for reading and keep on tagging us #lionsheartservice!
